YANKTON, S.D. -- The Sioux City Explorers and Sioux Falls Canaries both debuted several new faces during the first exhibition game of the season for both teams on Monday night.
The X's got on the board in the first inning when Wally Backman Jr sent a Ben Moore fastball over the right center field fence to give the X's and early 1-0 lead before the Canaries added a run in the bottom of the first off rookie hurler Preston Olson to knot the score at 1-1 after one inning of play. Olson would throw a scoreless second inning of work before turning the ball over to rookie Ryan Zimmerman.
The Canaries would take the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they added 3 runs off Zimmerman in his X's debut Monday night in Yankton, SD. Zimmerman would settle down in his second inning of work to hold the Canaries scoreless in the 4th inning.
The X's opened up the 5th inning with Backman collecting his second hit of the night followed by a double by 3B Bryan Pounds. After a wild pitch plated Backman, X's DH Palmer Karr laced an RBI single to plate Pounds to score the X's 3rd and final run of the game.
The Canaries would add an insurnace run in the 7th inning before newcomers Josh Poytress and Yunier Colon set the Canaries down in order in the final two frames.
For the X's, Wally Backman ended the contest with a 2-3 night with a RBI and two runs scored and Eliezer Mesa also collected a pair of hits to lead the X's offense which collected 8 hits on the night.
The X's will spend the next couple days at Lewis & Clark Park before traveling to Lincoln, NE on Thursday for exhibition game number 2 versus the Saltdogs with the first pitch set for 6:05 PM.
