SIOUX CITY, IA. – Before the first pitch of the 2013 season is even thrown, the Sioux City Explorers have seen changes in their roster. Today, they have announced relief pitcher, Daniel Carela has been signed by the Philadelphia Phillies and the X’s will retain the reversionary rights to Carela. The X’s have also sent catcher Clint Ourso to Fargo-Moorhead for a player to be named later.
A product of New York, NY, the 2013 season will mark Carela’s 5th year of professional baseball. Signed as a free agent in 2009 by the New York Mets, the 6’3” right-hander has spent time in the Mets and Dodgers farm systems, making it to high-A ball. Last year, Carela started the season with the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League, where he appeared in 36 games, posting a 2-2 record. The hard-throwing reliever pitched 36 innings, striking out 41 batters and posting a 3.00 earned run average before having his contract purchased by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Over his career, Carela has compiled a 7-7 record with a 4.11 earned run average in 97 appearances, striking out 123 batters in 118.1 innings pitched.
Ourso, a Southern University product from White Castle, LA, reported to the X’s spring training to battle to back-up every day catcher, Alberto Espinosa. With Southern, Ourso was a strong defensive catcher and started all 49 contests. He posted a 70% stolen base attempt percentage, throwing out 25 of 59 runners, and carrying a .988 fielding percentage. Offensively, Ourso hit .216 in 167 at bats, with eight doubles, two triples and 3 home runs.
