Gary, IN-----The Sioux City Explorers dropped below the .500 mark for the first time this season in a 4-3 Memorial Day contest to Gary South Shore.
After the Rail Cats had taken a 3-0 lead with two runs in the sixth inning, the Explorers came back and tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Bryan Pounds led off the inning with a double and then Leugim Barroso was safe at first on an error by Gary third baseman Danny Pulfer. Explorers catcher Adrian Martinez singled that scored Pounds to cut the Rail Cats lead to 3-1. After Brian Bistange sacrificed Barroso to third and Martinez to second, Eliezer Mesa singled to center to drive in two runs that tied the game at 3-3. With that base hit, Mesa extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
However, in the bottom of the seventh Drew Martinez had a one-out single and after a stolen base scored on a two-out single by Adam Klein, his second RBI of the game that gave the Rail Cats a 4-3. That winning run came off Explorers losing pitcher Jason Jarvis, who suffered his first loss in three decisions.
Taylor Sewitt picked up the win in relief while Ian Durham pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his first save of the season.
Explorers Peter Barrows went 0-4 to have his ten-game hitting streak broken.
The Explorers and Gary South Shore will meet again Tuesday at US Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana with game time set for 7:10pm.
