Explorers score early to down Sioux Falls 10-7

SIOUX FALLS | Sioux City scored nine times in the second and third innings to overcome an early deficit and claim a 10-7 American Association win over Sioux Falls at Sioux Falls Stadium on Thursday night.

 

The Canaries got the jump on Sioux City with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a homer from Reggie Abercrombie. Four more runs scored in the fourth frame helped along by three Sioux City errors but in between those outbursts, the Explorers scored four time in the second and five in the third frame.

 

Catcher Adrian Martinez (pictured) was the offensive star for Sioux City (35-61), driving in five runs with a two-run home run in the second and a bases-clearing double the next inning.

 

Ryan Lucero (3-4) got the pitching win as he battled through the miscues in the fourth inning and held the Canaries (39-57) at bay for the next two innings. Joe Zeller came on in the seventh and threw two more scoreless innings before Jimmer Kennedy pitched the ninth in a non-save situation and gave up a solo home run to Nick Van Stratten.

 

Currently fourth in the American Association batting race, Van Stratten had four hits in five at-bats to improve his average to .343.

 

Sioux City’s Peter Barrows hiked his team-high RBI total to 53 when he hit a sacrifice fly for an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

 

The teams will wrap up the series tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Lewis and Clark Park for Fan Appreciation Night which will wrap up with post-game fireworks.
