SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have acquired C Todd Jennings, a former 2nd round pick of the San Francisco Giants from the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks in exchange for INF Anthony Kaskadden. Upon execution of the trade, the X’s have inked Jennings to a 2014 American Association contract.
The 32-year old Orangevale, CA native was selected in the 2nd round by the San Francisco Giants in the 2003 MLB June draft out of Long Beach State University. Jennings spent (6) seasons (2003–2008) in the Giants organization, with his final three seasons being at the AA and AAA levels (2006-2008).
After his time with the Giants, Jennings sat out the 2009 season and spent the 2010 season with three teams in the Independent Atlantic league before splitting time in 2011 between the Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League and the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks of the American Association. The past two season’s Jennings has been a main stay behind the plate, catching 178 games for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, where current X’s field manager Steve Montgomery served as the team’s pitching coach the previous 10 seasons (2004-2013).
For his 10 year playing career, Jennings has logged 568 games behind the plate, while accumulating a .991 fielding percentage and has thrown out 28% of base runners. At the plate, Jennings holds a career .253 batting average and has tallied 668 hits, 104 doubles, and 22 HR’s while driving in 287 RBI’s.
“Adding a veteran catcher to manage our pitching staff was a big priority of mine and with having Todd lead our pitching staff the past few seasons in Fargo, I am confident he will do a tremendous job with our staff this season, comments X’s field manager Steve Montgomery. On top of his tremendous defense and ability to call a great game, Todd brings a veteran presence to our clubhouse.”
The 2013 season was Kaskadden’s first season of professional baseball and in 77 games for the X’s, the Lakemoor, IL native collected 63 hits and accumulated a .245 batting average to go along with a .956 fielding percentage.
