RailCats Pitching Bites Explorers

BOX SCORE-Game One

BOX SCORE-Game Two

Sioux City, IA-The Explorers encountered strong RailCats’ pitching for both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday night at Lewis & Clark Park, losing 2-0 in game one and 6-0 in game two.

In game one, Sioux City (6-15) managed just one base hit. Gary SouthShore (11-8) started the scoring in the second inning. Following a ground out, Zac Mitchell singled to right and then stole second. As Adam Taylor walked, Mitchell stole third. The very next batter, Danny Pulfer, placed a sacrifice fly to center that scored Mitchell tagging from third. The game’s only other run came in the third. Craig Maddox led off with a single to right. With two outs, Justin Gominsky singled to center and it was 2-0 RailCats.

Gary SouthShore right-hander Dustin Crenshaw baffled Sioux City batters the entire game. Crenshaw (1-1) retired the first 16 hitters he faced before Peter Barrows singled in the sixth. Crenshaw struck out two and did not walk a batter for the complete game shutout. Ryan Mitchell took the loss for the Explorers. Mitchell (0-4) lasted just three innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with no strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, four different RailCats accounted for their four hits.

In game two, Gary Southshore went to work early. The RailCats plated a run in the first after a lead-off walk to Danny Pulfer and a run scoring ground-rule double off the bat of Josh Romanski. The second inning, though, would be a difference-maker. Following a fly out, Jeremey Hamilton singled on the infield. A passed ball and back-to-back singles by Justin Gominsky and Zac Mitchell loaded the bases. A force out at home plate and a walk to Pulfer with the bases loaded made it 2-0. Drew Martinez then hit a fly ball up the left-field line that dropped and cleared the bases to make it 5-0. The scoring would be completed on a solo home run from Pulfer with one out in the fourth. Sioux City left the bases loaded in the second and never really threatened after that.

Stephen Hiscock went the distance for the RailCats and posted the second complete game of his career. Hiscock (2-1) allowed just three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. He is now 3-0 against the Explorers over the last three seasons. Greg Holt suffered the loss for Sioux City. Holt (0-4) worked five innings and yielded six earned runs on nine base hits. He struck out three and walked five. For the RailCats, Danny Pulfer had two RBIs while Drew Martinez and Jeremey Hamilton both went 2-for-4. Martinez collected three RBIs on the one double.

Sioux City wraps up the short home stand tomorrow night with the finale of its four-game series against Gary SouthShore. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For ticket information and promotion specials at Lewis & Clark Park, call 712-277-WINS or visit the Explorers website at www.xsbaseball.com.
