Sioux City, IA-Nate Samson, the Explorers leading hitter and shortstop, had his contract purchased today by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Samson will be assigned to the Diamondbacks double-A affiliate in Mobile, Alabama. He played in all 43 games for Sioux City this season and posted a .333 average with 2 home runs and 23 RBIs (tied for team lead). Samson led the team in hits with 55, doubles with 12, and scored a team high 26 runs. He walked 17 times with just 5 strikeouts and amassed 75 total bases (team lead). Samson had been ranked in the top ten in American Association hitting for much of the first half of the season. He began the season on a team-best 12-game hitting streak.
Samson previously spent eight years in the Chicago Cubs farm system, playing the majority of games at the double A level. He spent 2013 between the Cubs organization and the Winnipeg Goldeyes before signing with the Explorers in 2014. Samson was a 34th round draft pick of the Cubs back in 2006 out of high school. The Ocala, Florida native played parts of four seasons at double A, and parts of two seasons at triple A.
Sioux City continues its road trip in Texas Sunday night with the series finale at Amarillo. First pitch is set for 6:05. Following a road series at Grand Prairie, the Explorers return home to face Wichita July 3rd through 5th.
