Sioux City, IA-The Explorers were shut out for the fourth time this season as they fell 2-0 to South Division leading Wichita Saturday night at Lewis & Clark Park.
With the win, the Wingnuts (33-17) completed a three-game sweep of Sioux City. Wichita scored all it would need in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run to deep left by Jake Kahaulelio. Carlo Testa walked and stole second prior to the one-out blast.
Sioux City (20-30) produced its best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second. Andres Perez led off the inning with a line-drive single to center. Peter Barrows followed with a line-drive single to left. With runners at first and second, Michael Lang was called out for batter’s interference at the plate as the catcher attempted a pick-off throw to second. A fly-out and a strikeout quelled the rest of the X’s threat.
On the mound, Wichita starter Jon Link posted the victory. Link (6-2) went seven innings and gave up just four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. For the Explorers, Wade Morrison suffered the loss. Morrison (0-3) worked two-and-two-thirds and allowed two earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Matt Nevarez came on in the ninth and walked a batter but struck out two for his 14th save of the season.
Sioux City did not have a base runner reach past second in the game. Oscar Mesa collected two of the team’s four hits on the night. For the Wingnuts, Jake Kahaulelio was the hitting star as he finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Wichita outhit the X’s 5-4. Neither team made an error. The Explorers have been swept four times this season, with three of those coming at home.
Following two straight off days, Sioux City heads out on the road for a three-game series at North Division leading Winnipeg Tuesday through Thursday. The X’s return next Friday for a six-game home stand against Fargo-Moorhead and Kansas City July 11th-16th.
