SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have re-signed outfielders Michael Lang and Tim Colwell to 2015 American Association contracts. Lang will return for his 3rd season with the X’s, while the 2015 season will mark Colwell’s 2nd season donning an X’s uniform.
Lang, 26, originally signed with the Sioux City Explorers in 2012 after a sensational college career at Rutgers University and he quickly made an impact in his first professional season by compiling a .405 batting average in his first 35 games with the X’s. For his efforts, Lang had his contract purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Lang spent the remainder of the 2012 season and all of 2013 with the Diamondbacks affiliates in Yakima and South Bend. Lang returned to the X’s in 2014 and had another great year while appearing in only (79) games due to a hand injury that required him to miss nearly 20 games. In (79) games, Lang collected (87) hits, (15) doubles, (2) triples and accumulated a .295 batting average to go along with a .377 OBP, while also recording (15) stolen bases.
Oddly enough, Colwell signed with the X’s on June 13th as a replacement for Michael Lang when Lang injured his hand sliding into second base on June 11th in Gary, IN. Colwell had recently finished a stellar collegiate career just up the road at North Dakota State University (2011-2014). In his senior year, Colwell started all 51 games for the Bison in centerfield and batted .378 with 76 hits in 201 at bats and collected 22 RBI’s, four triples, one home run and 19 stolen bases, while compiling an on base percentage of .438 and slugging percentage of .478. For his efforts, Colwell was named the 2014 Summit League Player of the Year. Colwell holds the NDSU career records for triples (18), hits (291), stolen bases (52), stolen base attempts (68), at-bats (830), runs scored (172) and games played (211). In his first professional season in Sioux City, Colwell hit .307 while playing in (64) games and collected 70 hits, 10 doubles, 34 RBI’s and lead the X’s with 19 stolen bases while only being caught 3 times.
“Obviously Michael’s hand injury was a big setback for him and our team last season, but it also opened the door for Colwell to prove he too could turn a successful college career into a very successful first season in professional baseball in Sioux City like Michael had done his rookie season. Lang has fully recovered from his hand injury and we are very excited to have Lang and Colwell in our everyday line-up together this summer,” comments field manager Steve Montgomery.
With the signing of Lang and Colwell, the X’s now have (7) players under contract for the 2015 season, which will mark the X’s 23rd season in Siouxland.
