X’S SHUTOUT AIRHOGS 6-0 IMPROVE TO 72 WINS ON THE SEASON

The Sioux City Explorers shutout the AirHogs 6-0 at QuikTrip Park, improving their record to 72 wins, taking one step closer to the American Association record for wins in a season (73). 

 

Explorers scored their first three runs in the third inning. X’s catcher Brendan Slattery scored the first run, leading-off with a single and scoring off a Michael Lang RBI single. Later in the inning two more crossed home with a two run single hit by X’s shortstop Noah Perio Jr. 

 

In the fifth inning, a two-run home run smashed by X’s second baseman Ryan Court extended the Explorers to five runs after five innings of play. 

 

Sioux City tacked the sixth and final run in the sixth inning. X’s centerfielder Matty Johnson singled, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, and scored the final run on an error by the second baseman.  

 

Explorers starter Ryan Zimmerman (14-2) pitched a gem on the night, going seven scoreless innings with two hits allowed, one walk and eight strikeouts. Grand Prairie starting pitcher Bennett Whitmore (2-11) was charged with the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) in 5.2 innings pitched.
