The Sioux City Explorers got their seventy-third win of the season with the 10-2 victory over Grand Prairie, tying the American Association record for wins in a season.
The Explorers jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead early, plating two runs in the second inning and one run in the third. X’s third baseman knocked in the first run for Sioux City with an RBI double that scored Ryan Court from first base. Matt Koch later scored Mendonca with a base-hit single. X’s centerfielder Matty Johnson crossed home in the third off a wild-pitch.
In the top of the fourth, Sioux City extended their lead to seven runs. Matty Johnson knocked in a run with an RBI single for the first run, Tim Colwell crossed home on a groundout, Brock Kjeldgaard ripped a base-hit to plate a run, and Rene Tosoni scored off a fielder’s choice to give the X’s a huge 7-0 lead.
Grand Prairie plated their only runs of the game in the fourth. Ridge Hoopii-Halsam smashed a two-run home run to cut the lead to five runs after four innings of play.
In the eighth, X’s shortstop Noah Perio Jr hit a three-run bomb to make it 10-2, which would go on to be the final score of the game. Explorers starter Patrick Johnson (15-1) received the win, going seven innings with only two runs allowed and recording a season high of twelve strikeouts. AirHogs Logan Norris (3-6) was charged with the loss, giving up five runs in three innings pitched.
Sioux City had three batters finish with double-digit hits. X’s centerfielder Matty Johnson had a three hit night with two runs scored and an RBI. Explorers right-fielder Michael Lang went 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI. Catcher Matt Koch had two hits an RBI and a run scored as well.
