SIOUX CITY, IA - The American Association of Professional Baseball announced another 2015 postseason award and Sioux City Explorers centerfielder Matty Johnson was tabbed as the 2015 American Association Defensive Player of the Year.
The Omaha, NE native is in his first year with the Explorers after spending the last four seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization. Johnson displayed his durability and incredible defensive range and skill throughout the season, starting all 98 games the X’s have played with 230 putouts, six assists, no errors committed while making some unbelievable highlight reel diving catches on more than one occasion this season.
On the offensive side, the X’s lead-off hitter currently has a .265 batting average while leading the American Association in at-bats (416) and runs scored (80). Throughout the season Johnson has compiled 111 hits, 16 doubles, 6 triples, 2 home runs, 37 RBIs and 42 stolen bases.
