Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers offense seemed unstoppable on Pack the Park Night, with every X’s player in lineup recording a hit. Final score, Explorers 12, Winnipeg 2 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
Explorers scored early and often, plating three quick runs in the first inning. With runners at first and second, X’s third baseman Tommy Mendonca ripped a two-run double to right field. An RBI single by Jarek Cunningham scored Mendonca, giving Sioux City the 3-0 lead.
Sioux City tacked on another in the second inning. X’s left-fielder Derrick Robinson singled with two-outs and stole second base, putting him in scoring position. With Robinson at second and two outs, Explorers right-fielder Michael Lang tripled to deep-left to score the runner from second and extend their lead by four runs.
Winnipeg narrowed the deficit down to two runs in the fifth. Goldeyes centerfielder Josh Romanski scored the first with a sac-fly-RBI. An RBI single by Winnipeg’s right-fielder David Grohm knocked in the second run, cutting the lead to 4-2 after five innings of play.
Sioux City continued their hot-streak on the offensive end, plating two runs in the sixth inning. X’s own Derrick Robinson and Nate Sampson each doubled in the inning, with Noah Perio singling to score Robinson and later scoring himself off of two consecutive errors.
The Explorers went on to score an astounding twelve runs total, scoring three more runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to blowout the Goldeyes. Final score, Explorers 12, Winnipeg 2 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
Sioux City’s starting right-hander Jordan Risse (2-0) received the win, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while recording five strikeouts in five innings pitched. Goldeyes starting pitcher Duke Von Schamann (1-2) was charged with the loss, going 5.2 innings with six runs allowed.
