Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers had a memorable night at the plate, racking up thirteen runs on thirteen hits to blow out St. Paul 13-5 on Monday. X’s own Tim Colwell and Nate Samson each logged eight runs batted in, between the two.
St. Paul put up the first run of the game early, with a top of the first, solo-homer hit by Saints own, Alonzo Harris to get on the board first.
Sioux City answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. X’s second baseman, Noah Perio scored a run with an RBI single. The second run came off a Nate Sampson, sac-fly-RBI, scoring the runner from third base.
Another solo-shot by St. Paul tied and then took the lead, in the second and third innings. Tony Calwell homered in the second inning to tie the game. In the third inning, Saints shortstop, Tony Thomas singled to score a run to take the lead.
X’s tied it back up, in the bottom of the inning. Another sacrifice-fly by Nate Samson, scored the tagging runner at third base. After three innings, the score was tied once again, at 3-3.
The Saints were able to chalk up two important runs in the fourth inning. St. Paul’s offense was powerful early on, with another home run by the Saints squad. St. Paul’s catcher, Matt Garret smashed a two-run home run (3rd HR of the night for St. Paul), giving them the 5-3 tilt.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sioux City was able to cut the lead by a run. X’s left-fielder Tim Colwell, reached second with a double, advanced to third on a stolen base, and scored on a Brandon Slattery 6-3 groundout.
The Explorers would trail St. Paul for the next two innings, before going on an offensive tangent, racking up six runs in the seventh inning. Sioux City recorded the first two runs of the inning, off a bases-loaded walked batter and a fielder’s choice. The next three runs were all scored on one at-bat, with Tim Colwell tripling with the bases-loaded to plate three. Colwell scored the final run of the inning on a wild-pitch, extending their lead to 10-5.
Sioux City wasn’t finished at ten runs, tallying three more in the eighth inning. Nate Samson bagged two more RBIs (five RBIs total) with a two-run double, with Samson later scoring the final run of the night, on a sacrifice-fly to center field.

Explorers left-hander James Walsh, made his professional debut on Monday, finishing with a no decision, allowing five runs in five innings pitched, with three home runs allowed. X’s reliever Taylor Scott (1-0) received the win, pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
St. Paul’s starter Cody Scarpetta (1-0) got a no decision on the night, giving up four runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Saints lefty Cody Wheeler (0-2) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in only one inning.
The Sioux City Explorers had four batters record two hits or more, with Tim Colwell and Nate Sampson each having a memorable game on the offensive side. X’s left-fielder Tim Colwell, fell a home run shy of the cycle, while chalking up three RBI. Explorers shortstop Nate Samson, only had one official at-bat, but knocked in five runs, forced two walks and scored twice.
The Sioux City Explorers and St. Paul Saints will play game two of the series on Tuesday at 7:00 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
