Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers rallied in the ninth inning, but would not be able to overcome the deficit, falling to Gary Southshore 3-2 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
In the third inning, Gary Southshore recorded the first run of the contest. Railcats shortstop Jarred Mederos led-off the inning with a single, moved all the way to third on a Alex Crosby base hit, and scored on a (4-3) fielder’s choice.
Gary Southshore tacked on two more in the eighth inning. Railcats catcher Michael Falsetti plated runners from second and third with a two-run single, extending the lead to 3-0 after eight innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Explorers cut the lead to only one run, scoring two off an RBI single by Ralph Henrqiquez, but would go on to fall to the Railcats 3-2.
Railcats starter Richard Castillo (3-1) received the victory on the night, pitching seven scoreless innings with only four hits allowed. Taylor Black (s-7) got the save, but gave up two runs in the ninth inning.
Explorers right-hander Ryan Zimmerman (2-6) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks in 7.2 innings. X’s rookie Lance Spongberg pitched well in his professional debut, going 1.1 innings with no runs allowed.
