Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers struggled on Sunday night, falling to Gary Southshore 10-2 to end the three game series at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
In the first inning, Explorers put up the first run of the contest. X’s centerfielder Matty Johnson singled and later scored on an RBI double my Michael Lang, giving Sioux City the early 1-0 lead.
Gary Southshore recorded their first run an inning later. Jeremy Hamilton led-off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, advanced to third off a 6-3 groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.
Sioux City matched Gary Southshore’s run in the second, with a run themselves. Ralph Henriquez reached first on an error, advanced to second with a base-on-balls, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored off a sacrifice-fly to centerfield by Tommy Mendonca.
The Railcats bats took fire in the later innings, plating five runs in the fifth inning, one in the sixth and seventh innings, and two in the ninth to give them ten runs total on the night. Gary Southshore get the 10-2 victory over the Sioux City Explorers at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
Railcats starter Alex Gunn (2-0) received the victory for Gary Southshore, going seven solid innings with only two runs allowed (one earned) on three hits and four walks, while recording four strikeouts. Explorers right-hander PJ Francescon (0-1) struggled in his X’s debut, giving up five runs in only 2.2 innings pitched.
The Sioux City Explorers will begin a three game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 7:00 on Monday (July 4th) at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
