EXPLORERS WIN BOTH GAMES OF DOUBLEHEADER

The Explorers jumped to an early 8-0 lead, plating runs in the first, second and third innings. Sioux City scored three in the first inning off two RBI singles by LeVon Washington and Ralph Henriquez.

In the second inning, Derrick Robinson knocked in a run with an RBI double. Sioux City added four more runs in the third inning, scoring runs off a bases-loaded walk, and RBI double and a 4-3 groundout.

Due to inclement weather in the Lincoln area, the Thursday, August 11th scheduled Explorers game versus the Lincoln Saltdogs has been postponed and will be picked up on Friday, August 12th at 5:05 PM as part of a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 5:05 going to completion. Game two will start approximately thirty minutes after game one ends and will go seven innings.

 

GAME RESUMED AT 5:00 ON FRIDAY (AUGUST 12th)

In the sixth, Sioux City added another run. With runners at first and second with two outs, Tim Colwell ripped an RBI single to score the runner at second base and extend the lead to 9-0.

Lincoln recorded their first run of the contest in the bottom half of the sixth. Saltdogs left-fielder Brandon Jacobs smashed a solo-shot, putting Lincoln on the board and cutting the lead down to 9-1.

The Explorers went on to score two more in the eighth inning, bringing them to a final score of 11-1 in game one of the doubleheader.

X’s starter Bryan Escanio (4-3) pitched a gem, going seven solid innings with only one run allowed in seven innings pitched.

Saltdogs right-hander Matt Larkins (6-6) was charged with the loss, giving up eight runs on seven hits and four walks in only 3.1 innings pitched.

 

GAME TWO

 

Lincoln, NE- The Sioux City Explorers win back-to-back games on Friday evening, getting the 11-1 victory in game one, and winning game two with a 6-2 score at Haymarket Park.

Explorers jumped to an early 2-0 lead, plating runs in the first and third innings.  Nate Samson knocked in a run with an RBI single in the first inning. In the third, the X’s scored on a bases-loaded-walk, giving them the 2-0 lead.

Sioux City added another in the sixth. Tim Colwell worked up a one out walk, moved to second on a base-on-balls, advanced to third with a stolen base, and scored on a sacrifice-fly by Tommy Mendonca to extend the lead by three runs.

Lincoln recorded their first runs in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner at first and second, Luis Alen ripped a base-hit single to score the runner at second base for first run of the inning. Saltdogs second baseman Tyler Urps cut the lead down to 3-2 with an RBI double for the second run.

The Explorers chalked-up three more runs in the seventh to end the scoring on the night. All three runs scored came off RBI singles by Nate Samson, Tim Colwell and Ralph Henriquez, giving Sioux City the 6-2 victory over Lincoln.

Sioux City’s starter Bubba Maxwell finished with a no decision, allowing no runs in 4.2 innings. X’s right-hander Rob Wort (4-3) received the victory, giving up two runs in an inning pitched. Explorers reliever PJ Francescon (s-1) got the save, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Saltdogs starter Shairon Martis (7-7) was charged with the loss, giving up three runs on four hits, five walks with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.
