Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers kickoff the semi-finals with an exciting walk off victory in extra-innings. Three at-bats in the bottom of the tenth is all it took, with Tommy Mendonca doubling and scoring on a walk-off RBI single by Ino Patron.
Sioux City kicked-off the semi-finals with a quick run in the first inning. X’s right fielder Michael Lang smacked a one-out triple, putting him in position to score off a sacrifice-fly by Nate Samson for the first run of the game.
Sioux City jumped to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Tommy Mendonca led-off the inning with a single, and scored on the next at-bat on an RBI double by X’s first baseman Ino Patron. Patron later score off a sac-fly-RBI by Derrick Robinson for their third run of the game.
Wichita exploded for five big runs in the top of the fifth. Nick Van Stratten plated a run with a double. Martin Medina and Christian Stringer each knocked in two runs with RBI singles.
Explorers managed to cut the lead down to 5-4, with a run of their own in the bottom half. With the bases-loaded and no outs, Ralph Henriquez grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, scoring the runner at third base.
In the fifth, the X’s tied the game at 5-5. Ino Patron led-off with a single, moved to second on an error by the pitcher, and scored on an RBI single by Michael Lang to make it an even ball game, once again.
The score would stay tied at 5-5 through nine innings, forcing extra innings at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
In the bottom of the tenth inning, the Explorers sent the fans home happy. X’s third baseman Tommy Mendonca doubled to put him in scoring position with only one out. On the next at-bat, Ino Patron came through with a clutch RBI single to score Mendonca at third base and give the Explorers the 6-5 walk off victory.
Sioux City’s starter Bryan Escanio finished with a no decision, going 4.1 innings with three runs allowed and seven strikeouts. Explorers right-hander Rob Wort (1-0) received the victory, pitching three scoreless innings while striking out four on the night.
Wichita right-hander Tim Brown had a no decision on the night, allowing four runs in four innings pitched. Wingnut reliever Frankie Reed (0-1) was charged with the loss, giving up the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning.
