Canaries Hold Off Explorers

Huron, SD-Home runs from both Peter Barrows and Michael Lang were not enough as the Explorers fell to Sioux Falls in exhibition play 11-10 Friday night in South Dakota.

Sioux City took a 3-2 lead in the second inning on a two-run homer by Barrows. That was followed by a three-run blast from Lang in the same inning for a 6-2 X's lead. Sioux Falls trailed 8-5 in the eighth when the Canaries made their comeback. A six-run inning pushed the Birds into a lead of 11-8 heading to the ninth. The Explorers scratched two runs across to cut their deficit to one. With two outs, Canaries pitcher Kirk Clark struck out Luke Murton with the tying run at third.

Kaohi Downing picked up the win for Sioux Falls. Clark earned the save. Newly acquired Chris Valencia led the Canaries offensive attack with three hits, two walks, and a home run. The Sioux Falls win evens their exhibition record against Sioux City at 1-1. The X's took the first one earlier this week in blowout fashion 19-0. Sioux City has now scored 45 runs in three exhibition games.
