Saints Slam the X's

Sioux City, IA-An inside-the-park grand slam in the sixth inning for St. Paul spelled doom for the Explorers Tuesday afternoon as they lost 10-3 on Kid’s Day at Lewis & Clark Park.

The scoring started in the top of the third for the Saints (5-1). After a groundout, Evan Bigley drew a walk and Joe Bonfe doubled to left. A two-out single to left by Henry Wrigley staked the Saints to a 2-0 lead.

Sioux City (2-4) answered to tie it in the fourth. The X’s Rene Tosoni led off the inning with an infield single to third. The next batter, Andres Perez, reached on an error by the third baseman. With one out, Tom Mendonca notched his first extra-base hit of the season with a two-run triple into right-center field. The Explorers would take the lead the very next inning in the third. Following two quick outs, Michael Lang singled on the infield. Rene Tosoni’s first extra-base hit of the season, a double to right, scored Lang for a 3-2 advantage.

The game’s course altered in the sixth with one swing of the bat. A one-out single by Angelo Songco started the trouble. Joey Becker then doubled up the left field line. Devin Thaut was intentionally walked to load the bases before a pitching change ended Greg Holt’s start. Rob Wort came in and struck out Dwight Childs. With two outs and a chance to end the threat, Evan Bigley smoked a ball up the right field line. Explorers RF Tom Mendonca attempted a diving catch but the ball popped out of his glove and into foul ground. While the Explorers defense was calling for the ball to be ruled dead behind the Saints bullpen, the bases cleared and Bigley raced home for an inside-the-park grand slam. It was 6-3 Saints through six. They tacked on two more in each of the eighth and ninth innings for the final margin.

On the mound, reigning American Association pitcher of the week Anthony Claggett picked up the win. Claggett (2-0) went seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six base hits. He struck out just one but walked none. Sioux City starter Greg Holt took the loss in just his second professional start. Holt (0-2) worked five and-a-third and gave up five earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. He also walked five batters. Four Explorers pitchers struck out 13 but allowed a total of 14 hits.

Offensively, Evan Bigley had three hits and five RBIs for St. Paul. Joe Bonfe and Angelo Songco both posted three hits as well. Henry Wrigley drove in three. For Sioux City, Rene Tosoni and Tom Mendonca each had two hits in defeat. The win for the Saints was the franchise’s 1,000th in its history. St. Paul becomes just the 5th independent league team to reach the milestone.

The X’s first extended home stand of the season at Lewis & Clark Park continues Wednesday night against St. Paul. First pitch of the series finale is set for 7:05 p.m. Sioux City then welcomes Amarillo to town for four.
