Winnipeg Slips Past Sioux City

Winnipeg, MB-The Explorers and Goldeyes locked arms in a pitcher’s duel Tuesday night, and Winnipeg prevailed 2-1 after the potential tying run was cut down at the plate to end the game.

Sioux City (4-9) pushed the first run of the night across in the first inning. Rene Tosoni led off with a double into the right field corner. Michael Lang reached on an infield error. Lang was forced out at second on a ground ball by Andres Perez. With runners at first and third, Tom Mendonca knocked home Tosoni on a single that rolled between the mound and third base. The Explorers led it 1-0 through three innings.

Winnipeg (8-4) scratched a run across in the fourth to tie it. A two-out rally began with a single to right by Donnie Webb. Webb stole second and was later driven in on a base hit from Casey Haerther. The Goldeyes would take the lead the very next inning. Leading off the bottom of the fifth, Luis Alen doubled. A ground out moved Alen to third, and he scored on a sacrifice fly out to center by Jake Blackwood to give Winnipeg the lead. The Explorers had a chance to even up the score in the top of the ninth, but Nate Samson was tagged out at the plate to end the game attempting to score from second on a Peter Barrows’ base hit.

Both starters went six-and-a-third innings. Kyle Anderson picked up the win for Winnipeg. Anderson (2-0) allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk. John Straka suffered the loss for Sioux City. Straka (1-1) gave up two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Chris Kissock earned his third save of the season.

At the plate, Luke Murton had a two-hit night for the Explorers. Nate Samson’s 12-game hit streak to start the season ended as he went 0-for-3. Seven different Goldeyes produced a base hit. Each team had just seven hits for the game, and there was one error on each side.
