Explorers Shut Out by Saints

St. Paul, MN-The Explorers were held scoreless for the third time in the last four games and fell 4-0 to St. Paul in their series opener Friday night at Midway Stadium.

The game was scoreless until the Saints (14-8) broke through twice in the third. Angelo Songco led off the inning with a single. Joey Becker then singled to left and advanced to second as Songco was thrown out going to third. The next batter, Dwight Childs, doubled to bring home Becker for the game’s first run. Childs moved to third on a Devin Thaut single. Joe Bonfe made it 2-0 St. Paul on a sacrifice fly to left.

Willie Cabrera smacked a one-out, solo home run to plate the lone Saints run in the fourth. Another sacrifice fly in the fifth put St. Paul ahead 4-0.

The Explorers (6-17) managed just three base hits and made two errors on the night. One of those hits came from newly-signed Oscar Mesa in a pinch-hitting role. St. Paul starter Robert Coe went the distance in posting a complete-game shutout. Coe (4-1) fanned nine and walked just one as he registered his second win over Sioux City this season. John Straka took the loss for the X’s. Straka (1-3) worked seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on twelve hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Coe is the third pitcher in the last four games to hang a complete-game shutout on Sioux City.

At the plate, Devin Thaut led the Saints with a three-hit night and a run scored out of the leadoff spot. Joey Becker and Dwight Childs each had two hits as well. Nate Samson had a double for the Explorers in defeat. The X’s have lost a season-high six straight games.
