Sioux City Stops Short in St. Paul



St. Paul, MN-The Explorers committed a season-high five errors and lost their seventh straight game in a 4-3 defeat to the Saints Saturday night at Midway Stadium.


St. Paul (15-8) struck first for a second straight night. With one out in the first inning, Joe Bonfe doubled to left and then scored on a single to right by Evan Bigley. Sioux City’s Mark Sobolewski led off the third inning with a solo home run that tied the game at 1-1. It was Sobolewski’s second dinger of the season.


The Saints reclaimed the lead and added to it in the fourth and fifth innings respectively. Willie Cabrera led off the fourth with a single on the infield, and advanced to second on a ground out to the first baseman. The next batter, Brandon Wikoff, singled and Cabrera came around to score on an error that gave St. Paul a 2-1 lead. Wikoff reached second on the same error. The Saints made it 3-1 in the fifth as Evan Bigley reached on an error and later scored on a Brandon Tripp two-out single to left. Another unearned run would score for St. Paul in the seventh that made it 4-1.


Sioux City (6-18) conducted a ninth-inning comeback bid that fell just short. Peter Barrows led off with a walk. Following a strikeout, Todd Jennings walked. Barrows moved up to third on a wild pitch. Oscar Mesa then singled on the infield to score Barrows. After a strikeout, Rene Tosoni doubled to right and drove in Jennings to make it a 4-3 game. Nate Samson walked to load the bases before Tom Mendonca struck out swinging to end the game.


On the mound, Nick Barnese picked up the win for St. Paul. Barnese (2-1) worked five-and-two-thirds and gave up just one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Kohei Tsukada took the loss for the X’s. Tsukada pitched five-and-two-thirds and allowed three runs (only one earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Dan Sattler earned his sixth save of the season. Sattler pitched the final two innings for St. Paul, and gave up two earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks.


At the plate, Oscar Mesa went 2-for-5 with an RBI in his starting debut for the Explorers. Rene Tosoni also collected two hits with an RBI. For the Saints, Willie Cabrera led the way with three hits and a run scored. Evan Bigley and Brandon Tripp both went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.


Sioux City wraps up its three-game set in St. Paul tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 before starting a three-game series at Gary SouthShore Monday night.
