Sioux City Sweeps Winnipeg07/10/2014 9:27 PM
Winnipeg, MB-The Explorers scored twice in the opening frame and three hurlers made it hold up as they blanked the North Division-leading Goldeyes 2-0 for a series sweep Thursday night at Shaw Park.
With the win, Sioux City (23-30) posted its third shutout of the season and completed just its second series sweep. The Explorers plated the only runs they would need in the top of the first. Oscar Mesa led off the inning with a single to center field. Following a strikeout, Rene Tosoni moved Mesa to third with a double to right. The next batter, Andres Perez, made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Mesa. Tosoni touched home for a 2-0 lead as Peter Barrows singled to left.
Winnipeg (34-17) only had one base runner reach past second the entire night. Greg Holt (pictured) picked up the win in one of his best starts of the season. Holt (3-7) worked six innings and gave up seven hits with five strikeouts. He did not walk a batter for the first time. For the Goldeyes, Nick Hernandez suffered his first loss of the season. Hernandez (5-1) went seven-and-two-thirds and allowed two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Rob Wort pitched the ninth and walked a batter but struck out one to earn his first save. Geoff Broussard also threw two innings of scoreless and hitless relief to help preserve the shutout.
Tom Mendonca had the only two-hit night for the Explorers. Tyler Kuhn and Brock Bond both had two hits in defeat for Winnipeg. With the three-game sweep, Sioux City is 5-1 against the Goldeyes at Shaw Park this season. The Explorers have also won a season-high five straight road games, and sport a 15-13 road record. The X’s outhit Winnipeg 10-7, and have played a season-high four straight error-free games.
Sioux City returns Friday for a six-game home stand against Fargo-Moorhead and Kansas City July 11th-16th. First pitch Friday night against the RedHawks is set for 7 p.m. For ticket information and promotion specials at Lewis & Clark Park, call 712-277-WINS or visit the Explorers website at www.xsbaseball.com. |
