Big Innings Catapult Sioux City07/14/2014 10:33 PM
Sioux City, IA-The Explorers scored in just three innings Monday night en route to a 13-6 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones at Lewis & Clark Park.
Sioux City (25-32) has won two straight at home after a six-game home skid was snapped Sunday night against Fargo. The Explorers trailed 4-0 as they came to bat in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back walks to start the inning put Oscar Mesa and Michael Lang aboard. A single from Rene Tosoni loaded the bases. Andres Perez then grounded into a 6-4 fielder’s choice for the first run of the night. Peter Barrows cut the lead to 4-2 with an RBI double to left that brought home Lang. Amos Ramon followed with a double of his own to deep right that scored Perez. After a fly-out and a walk, Barrows and Ramon came around to score as Chris Escobar smacked a line-drive to left for a 5-4 Explorers advantage.
Kansas City (27-30) staked its claim to another lead in the fifth. Ray Sadler led off the inning with a single to left. A sac bunt by Bryan Sabatella pushed Sadler to second. Vladimir Frias walked. Sadler and Frias then tagged on a fly-out to center and runners were at second and third. Brian Erie swung the pendulum in the T-Bones favor with a two-run scoring double to right-center that made it 6-5.
The Explorers had one more big inning in them as they came to bat in the sixth. Chris Escobar led off with a walk. After a strikeout, Michael Lang was hit by a pitch. Another strikeout and a wild pitch placed runners at second and third with two outs. Andres Perez walked to load the bases. Peter Barrows added to his run-producing night with a hard line-drive single to left that sent Escobar and Lang home for a 7-6 lead. Amos Ramon loaded the bases again with an infield single. Not to be outdone, Tom Mendonca sharply singled to right and brought in two more runs. Todd Jennings then made it 10-6 with a line-drive single to left-center.
Sioux City closed the scoring with three in the seventh, including a two-run home run to deep left by Peter Barrows. It was his fourth round-tripper of the season, but his first since June 18th at Kansas City. On the mound, Geoff Broussard picked up the win in relief. Broussard (6-1) pitched two innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout and one walk. Chris Squires took the loss for Kansas City. Squires (2-3) worked an inning but gave up five earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts, two walks, and a hit-batter.
At the plate, the X’s outhit the T-Bones 13-12. Peter Barrows (pictured) went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, and a homer. He drove in five and scored three times. Rene Tosoni and Amos Ramon each collected two hits as well. Tom Mendonca and Chris Escobar each posted two RBIs. For the T-Bones, Brian Erie was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Nick Schwaner had two hits and two RBIs. It was the fifth time this season Sioux City scored in double figures, and the Explorers have won all five of those games. With the two five-run innings against Kansas City, the X’s have scored five or more in a single inning seven times this season.
