Tosoni Named American Association Player of the Week


DURHAM, NC- The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Sioux City Explorers infielder/outfielder Rene Tosoni (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Player of the Week for the week ending July 27th.


Tosoni posted a batting average of .500 for the week (15-for-30 in seven games). He had three doubles, one triple, and one home run in that stretch. Tosoni also scored five runs and collected seven RBIs. He had the game-winning base hit in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Gary 7-6 on July 24th at Lewis & Clark Park. In addition, Tosoni had a 4-for-4 game in a loss at Sioux Falls where he picked up two singles, a double, and a triple. He had at least one hit in every game. It is the third weekly honor for an Explorer in 2014. Patrick Johnson has been named the league pitcher of the week twice.   


For the week, Tosoni’s average jumped from .261 to .287. He has 6 home runs with 39 runs batted in on the season. Tosoni is second on the club in homers and RBIs. He currently leads the Explorers in hits, runs, doubles, walks, and total bases. The Canadian-born Tosoni is in his eighth season of professional baseball, his first in the independent ranks. He appeared in 60 games for the Minnesota Twins back in 2011, and hit the first grand slam by a Twin at the new Target Field. Tosoni also played for Team Canada in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
