X's Notch First Win Over St. Paul

St. Paul, MN-The Explorers yielded just three base hits and finally posted their first win over the Saints this season with a 6-2 victory Friday night at Midway Stadium.

 

Sioux City (34-45) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, the first over St. Paul (44-32) in eight games. The Explorers struck first with a single mark in the third inning. Michael Lang singled and later scored on a triple by Tim Colwell. Sioux City added two more runs in the fifth. Dillon Usiak (pictured) and Oscar Mesa both reached on singles. Colwell brought home Usiak with a base hit, and Mesa scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

 

St. Paul fought back with a two-spot in the bottom of the fifth. The Saints received back-to-back walks. The runners moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. A one-out single by Jared McDonald scored both and cut the X’s lead to 3-2.

 

In the sixth, Sioux City gained a three-run cushion. Peter Barrows singled. Tom Mendonca doubled. A sacrifice fly out from Amos Ramon drove in Barrows. A run-scoring double by Dillon Usiak plated Mendonca and made it 5-2. Peter Barrows added a solo home run in the seventh for the game’s final margin.

 

On the mound for the Explorers, reliever Alex Burnett posted the win. Burnett (5-1) worked two-and-two-thirds and gave up one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Jeff Shields took the loss for St. Paul. Shields (5-7) lasted five-and-a-third and allowed five earned runs on eleven hits with one strikeout and no walks. Rob Wort pitched the final two innings and struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.

 

Tim Colwell was the hitting star of the night for Sioux City. Colwell went 3-for-5 with two singles, a triple, and two RBIs. Peter Barrows had a two-hit game with the homer and a single. Dillon Usiak collected two hits with a single and a double. Oscar Mesa also had two singles. For the Saints, Evan Bigley had two hits and Jared McDonald drove in two.   

 

Sioux City continues its seven-game road trip in St. Paul with the third of four Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Midway Stadium. After a three-game set in Gary, the Explorers are back home against Lincoln on August 14th.
