Late Surge Lifts Sioux City

St. Paul, MN-The Explorers exploded for six runs in the ninth inning to register a 10-1 victory Saturday night at Midway Stadium.

 

Sioux City (35-45) has now won two straight over St. Paul after dropping the first seven games of the season series. The Saints (44-33) opened the scoring with a single run in the fourth. The Explorers immediately tied it with a tally in the fifth. With one out, Rene Tosoni tripled. He then scored on a dropped third strike with Andres Perez at the plate.

 

Two runs in the seventh moved the X’s in front to stay. Oscar Mesa led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Colwell (pictured). Rene Tosoni followed with a walk. Andres Perez then singled for a 2-1 lead as Mesa scored. A two-out single from Tom Mendonca brought in Tosoni for a 3-1 advantage.

 

Sioux City added one in the eighth on a two-out double by Tim Colwell. The extra-base hit scored Dillon Usiak, who had been hit by a pitch leading off the inning. The Explorers then erupted for six more in the ninth to close the show. A bases-loaded walk of Amos Ramon scored a run. A double from Usiak cleared the bases for three more. Michael Lang doubled to score Usiak. A ground out brought Lang home for the final run.

 

On the mound, reliever Geoff Broussard posted the win for Sioux City. Broussard (7-1) pitched two-and-two-thirds and gave up just one hit with five strikeouts and two walks. Starter Alex Caldera worked five innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Ben Hughes suffered the loss for St. Paul. Hughes (4-2) pitched one-and-two-thirds and gave up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

 

At the plate, Tom Mendonca and Tim Colwell each had three hit nights. Colwell also collected two RBIs. Andres Perez picked up two hits with a run and an RBI. Dillon Usiak had three RBIs and two runs scored. Five different St. Paul batters each posted a hit.       

 

Sioux City continues its seven-game road trip in St. Paul with the series finale Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 at Midway Stadium. After a three-game set in Gary, the Explorers are back home against Lincoln on August 14th.
