X'S OPEN 2015 EXHIBITION SEASON WITH VICTORY05/11/2015 6:58 AM
YANKTON, SD - Your hometown Sioux City Explorers started the scoring early and never looked back as the X's opened the 2015 exhibition season in fashion by taking down the Canaries of Sioux Falls by a final score of 21-11 at Riverside Park in Yankton, SD.
X's new leadoff hitter, Matty Johnson started the game with a single to left field and Michaell Lang stepped to the plate with Johnson on first base and sent a towering homerun over the leftfield wall to give the X's an early 2-0 lead. Rene Tosoni and Brock Kjeldgaard followed with back to back walks and Tom Mendonca was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The X's were in position to put this one away early and thats exactly what they did as 2B Ryan Court would fly out to right to score Tosoni from third base before LF Tim Colwell wrapped an RBI double to extend the X's lead to 5-0. The X's were not done yet as new SS, Noah Perio would send the very first pitch he saw over the left field wall to push the X's lead to 8-0 after a half inning of play.
Dustin Loggins started the game for the X's and shut the Canaries down in the bottom half of the first inning before the X's got the bats going again in the top of the second and plated another 3 runs to make it 11-0 after only an inning and a half. Loggins would shut the Canaries down again in the bottom half of the inning before yielding a grand slam home run in the bottom of the 3rd before turning the ball over to RHP Ryan Zimmerman, whom would give up just two hits and strike out 6 batters in 2 2/3 innings of relief. The X's would plate four more runs in the 5th and 6th innings to push the game to 19 - 7 after 6 innings of play before each team added a few more runs to finish the game with the X's taking the contest 21-11.
The X's will continue thier exhibition season on Tuesday, May 12th when the X's travel to Haymarket Park in Lincoln, NE to take on the Lincoln Saltdogs in a 6:35 PM contest.
