The Sioux Falls Canaries won game three of their four game series with the Sioux City Explorers Saturday night by a score of 3-0.
Explorers starter John Straka pitched a good ball game, only allowing three runs on seven hits, while facing 23 batters. The Canaries scored one run in the second on a Richard Stock RBI single, and then two runs in the fifth off of a wild pitch that scored centerfielder Harrison Kain and a single by Brian Humphries that scored Jerome Pena from third.
Pitching was the name of the game for Sioux Falls, holding the Explorers scoreless through nine innings. Canaries pitching held the X’s to only six hits in the contest. Left hander Miguel Pena (1-0) was the starter for Sioux Falls, going 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, one walk, while striking out two. Canaries bullpen arms Cameron McVey and Chase Johnson pitched on the night as well with Johnson receiving the save.
The X’s had two hitters with double digit hits on the night, Brock Kjeldgaard went 2 for 4 with two singles as well as second baseman Ryan Court. The Explorers finished with six hits, one error and seven batters left on base, Canaries ended with nine hits, no errors and seven left on.
Winning pitcher for Sioux Falls was left-hander Miguel Pena (1-0), righty John Straka was charged with the loss (0-1). Explorers relief pitchers Ryan Zimmerman and Billy Bullock both pitched out of the bullpen for Sioux City, with Zimmerman going 3.0 innings without allowing a run, and Bullock going 1-2-3 in his one inning outing against the Canaries.
The Sioux City Explorer’s will will finish the series against Sioux Falls on Sunday (May 24th) at Canaries ball park, Game time - 4:05.
