XS EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO SIX IN A ROW05/30/2016 8:36 PM
Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers extend their winning streak to six games with the 8-7 victory over the RedHawks in Fargo-Moorhead. The X’s started off the season with an 0-6 record but has since improved to 6-6, while winning their last six games in a row. The Sioux City Explorers seemed to have rhythm going to start the series with Fargo-Moorhead, plating two quick runs on similar fashion in the first and third innings. Former Cincinnati Red and X’s 2016 lead-off hitter Derrick Robinson, came out swinging, starting off the series with a lead-off triple and putting him in position to score on a Noah Perio sac-fly-RBI for the first run of the game. The Robinson-Perio two-man punch worked again in the third inning. Derrick Robinson led-off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, advanced to third with a stolen base, and scored on an RBI double by X’s second baseman Noah Perio, for the second run of the game. Jarek Cunningham scored Perio later in the inning with an RBI single. Fargo-Moorhead plated their first run in the bottom of the third. RedHawks shortstop Bryan Johnson led-off with a base-on-balls, moved to second with a Ryan Pineda single, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice-fly hit by Keury De La Cruz. Sioux City exploded in the fourth inning, extending their lead to six runs with four more in the top half. The Explorers scored the first two runs in the inning off sacrifices, scoring the runners at third base. Two RBI singles by X’s infielders Noah Perio and Nate Sampson plated the final two runs in the inning. The RedHawks were able to cut the deficit by three runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Fargo-Moorhead’s right-fielder K.D. Kang scored the first run with an RBI double. The next two runs would score off a two-run blast by Bryan Jones, cutting the lead to 7-4. The Explorers extended their lead to an even four runs in the sixth inning. X’s right-fielder Michael Lang tripled and later scored on another sac-fly-RBI by Noah Perio, giving Sioux City the 8-4 lead, after six innings of play. Fargo-Moorhead rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs to cut the lead to 8-7 but wouldn’t overcome the deficit, falling to the Explorers 8-7 at Newman Outdoor Field. Explorers starter Cody Forsythe (1-1) received his first victory of the season, going five innings with four runs allowed (three earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two. RedHawks right-hander Tyler Harris (0-1) was charged with the loss for Fargo-Moorhead, allowing seven runs (six earned) in only three innings pitched. The Sioux City Explorers will play game two of their three game series vs Fargo-Moorhead on Tuesday (May 31st), first pitch-7:05.
