Canaries even series with Sioux City with 6-5 win

SIOUX FALLS | Sioux Falls' Trey Vavra hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give the Sioux Falls the lead and it went on to edge Sioux City 6-5 in an American Association baseball game at the Birdcage Saturday evening.

Vavra, the younger brother of Sioux City's Tanner Vavra, hit a long fly to left off X's starter Kramer Sneed that cleared the fence to give the Canaries a 5-4 lead.

Sneed (6-5) got one more out after Vavra's round-tripper and left after that having thrown 101 pitches. He gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks while fanning four.

Jabari Henry, the American Association home run leader, also hit a solo home run off X's reliever Chris Powell in the seventh inning, his 26th to give him two more than Kansas City's Kevin Keyes.ment (1 of 1): 0:15

That homer gave the Canaries a 6-4 lead and turned out important when Sioux City got a run in the eighth on a double by LeVon Washington and an RBI ground out by Nate Samson.

The Explorers got Jayce Ray to second base after a lead-off walk and sacrifice in the ninth, but Tony Campana's soft liner behind second base was caught and Ray was doubled up to end the game.

The Explorers close out their season with two games with their I-29 rivals at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park, Sunday evening at 6:05 pm and Monday at 2:05 p.m.
