X’s outscore Airhogs 21-4 in Doubleheader Sweep

Sioux City, IA - After a road trip where the Explorers went 1-5 some home cooking was much needed and they got exactly that as they sweep the Texas Airhogs in a three game series, highlighted by a doubleheader sweep winning game one 3-1 and game two 18-3.

Game 1

In a low scoring game the X’s were able to scrape by with a win to open the day. Zach Jemiola had his best start for the Explorers this season tossing four and two-thirds innings of one run ball, allowing just five hits, a walk and striking out one.

Sioux City staked him out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd when Dean Green lead off the inning with a walk and Dexture McCall followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Luke Bonfield began his big day with a two run double.

Texas cut the X’s lead in half in the 5th when Can Jie lead off the frame with a double, he would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt and score on a ground out from Stephen Haviar and it was 2-1 Explorers.

The Explorers bullpen was called in from that point and Tyler Fallwell (1-0) earned the win by tossing an inning and a third allowing only a walk and notching two punch outs.

Michael Lang would hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot to lead off the sixth making it 3-1 Sioux City.

All three Explorers runs came off of Zech Lemond (0-2) who ended up throwing a complete game going six innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out two and walking one.

Matt Pobereyko (3) would throw a perfect inning, earning him the save and shutting the door on Texas in game one.

Game 2

Game two of the double header was a much different story as the Explorers offense came alive and pulverized Airhogs pitching to the tune of 18-3.

Sioux City would score in every inning but the first. And the scoring began in the second with a two out rally. The inning should have ended on a ground ball to third by Dexture McCall but a low throw pulled the first baseman off the bag and the floodgates opened for Sioux City. McCall stole second and was then chased home by a Nelson Ward double. Who was then brought in by a Luke Bonfield double, who in turn scored on a single from Hunter Wood and just like that instead of inning over it was 3-0 Explorers.

Sioux City added four more runs in the 3rd, highlighted by a Jose Sermo two run double. And Dean Green drove in two more runs in the 4th.

A lone run 5th was the lowest of the run totals per inning for Sioux City and then the 6th was an eight run inning that erased any doubt in the ball game. In that inning the X’s scored eight runs on six hits, and sent thirteen men to the plate.

All eleven position players on the roster had an at bat during the game and all eleven either drove in a run or scored one. Ten out of the eleven picked up an RBI, and five players tallied multiple hits and  RBI’s in the game.

It was by far the Explorers highest run total and hit total as the X’s rapped out 19 total hits.

Max Duval (1-2) didn’t need all 18 runs scored to help him to a victory, he earned his first win as an Explorer with six innings, allowing nine hits and three runs while walking just two and striking out seven.

Sioux City now goes on another road trip as they will play three games in Chicago and four in Winnipeg against the two teams with the best records in the league at the moment. The Explorers will start against the Chicago Dogs on Friday with first pitch set for 7:05 pm, Eric Karch will get the start for Sioux City and will face right hander Trevor Simms for the Dogs.
