EXPLORERS FILL THE OUTFIELD04/24/2012 1:58 PM
SIOUX CITY, IA - Coming into the 2012 season, the Sioux City Explorers had an empty slate in the outfield with all three outfielders from the 2011 squad retiring. Today, the X’s have announced their outfield makeup for the upcoming season with the signing of Brandon Newton and Matt Mansilla. The two will join rookie outfielder Michael Lang in camp starting on Saturday, May 5th.
Newton played in the Independent North American and Frontier Leagues in 2011, splitting his time between the Lake County Fielders and Normal Cornbelters. Between the two teams, the 26-year-old combined for 89 hits, 16 doubles, 8 triples and 5 home runs while producing 35 runs, in 67 games. Not only is Newton a consistent bat with a .308 career batting average, he also has speed on the bases with 41 stolen bags over two seasons. In 2010, the 6’1” 220 pound left-hander was a member of the Schaumburg Flyers of the once Northern League. That year, Newton posted 97 hits in 85 games with 15 doubles, crossing the plate 46 times and producing 27 runs. Newton also provides the X’s flexibility as he has experience in the outfield and infield.
Mansilla, a teammate of Newton’s in 2011, was drafted in the 22nd round by the Detroit Tigers in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft out of the College of Charleston. The Rimini, Italy native spent two seasons in the Tigers system, making it as high as their AA affiliate, the Erie Seawolves. The 6’1”, 180 pound right hander, has primarily spent his time in left field, but also has experience at each outfield position. Last year with the Lake County Fielders, Mansilla appeared in 36 games, recording 37 hits, 9 doubles, 2 home runs, while driving in 18 runs with a .270 batting average.
”The Explorers are excited to bring in two new faces to the 2012 squad,” commented X’s Field Manager, Stan Cliburn. “Both outfielders bring experience and talent to the club.”
The X’s 2012 Home Opener will be Saturday, May 19th versus the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants in a 7:05pm contest. It’s Magnet Schedule Giveaway presented by Great Southern Bank, along with a post-game fireworks show by Lantis Fireworks.
