SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers have made another big splash in their pitching department with announcing they have re-acquired and re-signed RHP Rob Wort to a 2015 American Association contract after Wort was provided his release from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization this past weekend.

Wort, 26, originally signed with the X’s in April of 2014 and in 24 games, he posted a 2 – 1 record with an astonishing 0.97 ERA out of the bullpen. In 37.0 innings of work, Wort struck out 58 batters and only allowed 14 free passes, while only giving up 4 earned runs in his 24 appearances for the X’s.  For his performance, Wort had his contract purchased on August 12, 2014 by the Arizona Diamondbacks and was assigned to the Hillsboro Hops in the Northwest League in Hillsboro, OR.  For the Hops, Wort compiled a 3-0 record with a miniscule 1.08 ERA, while appearing in 7 games and recording 13 strikeouts to only 2 walks in 8.1 innings of work.

“Rob had an outstanding season last year with us and with the Diamondbacks organization and its unfortunate things didn’t work out with the Diamonbacks,” comments manager Steve Montgomery. “Being able to turn the ball over to a shut down reliever late in the game like Wort makes my job much easier and its great knowing Rob will be in the back end of our bullpen again this season.”

Prior to joining the X’s in 2014, Wort pitched the previous 5 seasons in the Washington National organization.  In 2013, Wort spent the majority of the season with the Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League (High-A). He was 1-0 with a 3.71 ERA and recorded 6 saves in 31 relief appearances. Wort allowed 16 runs (14 earned) on 25 hit and struck out 48 batters and walked 29 in 34.0 innings.  Wort appeared in 4 games at the end of the season with the Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League (AA).

Wort was selected by the Nationals in the 30th round of the 2009 draft out of Jefferson College (MO). In six professional seasons, the St. Charles, MO native is 20-11 with a 2.80 ERA and 33 saves in 199 games.  In 250.2 career innings pitched, Wort has struck out 333 batters while only yielding 123 walks.
