The Sioux City Explorers fell to the Saints 2-0 in a pitchers duel to start their three game series in St. Paul.
Starting pitching was the name of the game for both ball clubs, with neither team allowing a run until the seventh inning. In the seventh, St. Paul scored a run on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch that advanced the runner from third (Mike Kvasnicka) to score to take the late 1-0 lead after seven innings.
St. Paul went on to plate the second and final run of the game in the eighth inning off a wild pitch. Final score at CHS Field, Saints 2, Explorers 0.
Explorers starter Ryan Strufing was charged with the loss allowing one earned run off five hits, three walks with four strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Saints left-hander Kevin Sneed (13-2) received the win going eight innings without a run allowed. St. Paul reliever Ryan Rodebaugh (s-22) got the save, closing it out 1-2-3 to end game one.
X’s shortstop Noah Perio Jr. was the only Explorer to finish with double-digit hits, going 2 for 4.
