The Sioux City Explorers couldn’t get it done in St. Paul, falling 6-1 to the Saints at CHS field.
St. Paul knocked in a run early in the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. Saints left-fielder Willie Argo singled, moved all the way to third off a Vinny DiFazio double and scored on a ground ball to second base.
Explorers tied it in the second inning, Noah Perio Jr doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored off an RBI groundout by Ryan Court. That would be the lone run of the game for Sioux City with Saints starting pitcher Jeff Shields having a dominant performance on the mound.
In the fifth, Alonzo Harris singled, moved to second on an error, advanced to third and later home off of two wild pitches to retake the lead 2-1 after five innings.
The Saints went on to plate four big runs in the seventh inning to take the commanding 6-1 lead, which went on to be the final score of the game.
Explorers starter John Straka (9-2) was charged with the loss allowing five runs (four earned on ten hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. X’s reliever Jimmer Kennedy pitched the final innings giving up one earned run.
Saints starting pitcher Jeff Shields (12-2) pitched a gem at CHS field only allowing one run on seven hits and one walk in seven innings pitched.
Sioux City had two hitters with double-digit hits, Noah Perio went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored, continuing hit hot-streak at the plate. X’s second baseman Ryan Court had himself a two hit night on the day as well.
