Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers ended the series vs the AirHogs with a loss, falling to Texas 9-4 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
Texas got on the board first, adding two early runs to start the top half. With a runner on and one out, AirHogs own, Burt Reynolds smashed a two-run homer to take the quick 2-0 lead.
Explorers cut the lead by a run in the bottom half of the first. X’s right-fielder, Michael Lang reached base-on-balls, moved all the way to third on a base-hit single, and scored off a sac-fly-RBI by Nate Sampson.
The AirHogs tacked on another, in the second inning. Michael Miller led-off with a single, moved to second and third off back-to-back base hits, and scored on a sacrifice-fly to centerfield.
Sioux City got the bats rolling in the third, tying the game at 3-3. X’s second baseman, Noah Perio doubled to score a run, and later scored himself on an error by the pitcher.
Texas was able to respond with a four key runs in the fifth. AirHogs designated hitter, Devon Rodriguez took the lead with an RBI single, scoring the runner from third. On the next at-bat, Texas took charge with a three-run home run by Michael Miller, extending the lead to 7-3.
The AirHogs chalked up two more runs in the seventh. Cody Lenahan doubled, scoring a couple to expand their lead even further.
Explorers scored one more in the contest, but would go on to fall to the AirHogs 9-4 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park. Texas wins the three game series 2-1 over Sioux City.
AirHogs right-hander Matt Shepherd (1-2) received the victory on the afternoon, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks in six innings pitched. Explorers starter Graham Johnson (3-1) was charged with the loss, giving up eight runs in 6.2 innings.
The Explorers will open a three game series vs the St. Paul Saints on Monday (June 20th) at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
