HIGH SCORING AFFAIR GOES TO SIOUX CITY
Wichita, KS - In a battle of the top two teams in the American Association the Explorers came out on top with the high scoring victory of 13-9.
In a battle of heavy weights in the American Association the action did not disappoint. With both teams coming into the ball game with the top two records in the league and Wichita trailing the X’s by 3.5 games even with Sioux City on a historic start to the season.
The X’s came out of the gates firing in the first. Luis Durango reached on an infield single and Michael Lang was safe at first on a bunt single. Jay Austin then moved both of them over with a sacrifice bunt. Nate Samson brought home the games first run with a single into left field. Jose Sermo then doubled home both Lang and Samson to make it 3-0 Sioux City after the top of the first.
Wichita though responded right back in the bottom of the first. Logan Watkins reached on an infield single, but was thrown out at second on the following batter allowing Zach Nehrir to reach on a fielders choice. Abel Nieves walked, which was followed by a Fernando Perez triple bring both runners home. Making it 3-2 Sioux City. But that’s as close as the Wingnuts would get to tying the game as they left Perez at third to end the inning.
Sioux City opened up the game in the second with a five run rally. Which all started on a Daniel Jackson single. Durango got on base on a catchers interference and then Michael Lang unloaded on the first pitch he saw of his at bat over the left field wall for a 3 -run home run. Nate Samson followed with a solo home run of his own, to make it 7-2. Jose Sermo then walked and Jay Baum tripled to bring home Sermo making it 8-2 Sioux City.
Wichita though answered again in the second inning, Logan Trowbridge started by reaching on an error and Hunter Clanin followed with a single. Logan Watkins brought in a run with a single. Nehrir brought home a run with an infield base hit and Abel Nieves singled home a run making it 8-5 Sioux City after two.
Luis Mateo (6-2) settled down for the X’s after the second. In total Mateo went 6 innings, allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, on 7 hits, walking just 1 and striking out a season high 9 batters. Mateo after the second inning retired the last 14 out of 15 hitters he faced and finished the night by setting down the last 10 straight Wingnuts that came to bat.
Jay Baum hit his fourth home run of the season with a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning. It was the third home run of the game for the X’s the first time this season that they have hit a trio of home runs in a game. Making it their fourth multi homer game of the game.
Sioux City tacked on four more runs in the fourth Luis Durango singled with one out in the inning, And Lang singled as well his third hit of the night. Jay Austin then singled down the right field line scoring Durango but the ball was misplayed by the right fielder and it allowed Lang to score from first base. Nate Samson walked, and Jose Sermo picked up his third RBI of the game with a base hit. Dexture McCall then drove home Samson with an RBI single making it 13-5 X’s.
Wichita though answered in the eighth with four runs of their own they did it on only two hits in the inning. After the bases were loaded from a walk and two hit batters with two outs Hunter Clanin drove home two runs with a single and Watkins brought home another two runs with a double.
Both the X’s and Wingnuts though would go down in order in the ninth closing out the game one victory for Sioux City. The X’s are now 30-10 on the season. Their pitchers have not allowed a home run in 13 straight games and when scoring first in a ballgame Sioux City is 23-2.
Game two will be on Saturday with first pitch at 7:05, with James Dykstra going for the Explorers and Ticket Banwart going for Wichita.
