LATE INNING HAUNTS EXPLORERS

WINNIPEG, Manitoba –The Sioux City Explorers (32-33) couldn’t get the win Wednesday night, falling 10-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (27-37). The X’s kept it close for much of the game, but a six-run eighth inning from the Goldeyes snatched any chance of a win for Sioux City. The loss marks the Explorers fifth in a row and seventh in their last 10 games.

The Explorers scored first when, on the first pitch of the third inning, Sioux City’s Scott Ota ripped a home run off Goldeyes starter Landen Bourassa (5-5), giving the X’s an early 1-0 lead. Later that inning, Explorers Matt Lloyd came around to score when Kyle Kasser knocked a double down the third base line, extending the Sioux City lead to 2-0.

The X’s picked up another run in the fourth inning when Explorers Vince Fernandez tripled and crossed the plate after a Delvin Zinn infield single, making it 3-0 Sioux City.

The Goldeyes got one back in the bottom of the fourth when Winnipeg’s Max Murphy ripped a solo shot off X’s starter Austin Drury (2-4) for the Goldeyes’ first hit of the game, cutting the Explorers lead to 3-1. Winnipeg cut the Sioux City lead to one later in the inning when Goldeyes Jacob Bockelie scored on a Najee Gaskins bases-loaded sac fly, making it a 3-2 game.

Winnipeg tied it up in the bottom of the fifth when Goldeyes Keith Torres knocked a solo shot of his own over the wall, knotting it 3-3.

In the bottom of the seventh after Winnipeg’s Najee Gaskins singled off X’s Drury and took third on a failed pickoff attempt, Brynn Martinez knocked an RBI single off Explorers reliever Nate Gercken, giving the Goldeyes a 4-3 lead.

The eighth inning proved to be the decisive one, as Winnipeg started things off with a run when Goldeyes Andy Armstrong came home on a Chris Burgess bases-loaded single, making it 5-3. Winnipeg’s Max Murphy and Miles Simington then scored on a Hidekel Gonzalez RBI single, extending the lead to 7-3.Goldeyes Burgess and Gonzalez crossed the plate after that on a Tra Holmes RBI single, making it 9-3 Winnipeg. Sioux City’s Brandon Brosher relieved Nate Gercken before Goldeyes Najee Gaskins scored on a Keith Torres sac fly, making it a 10-3 game.

Winnipeg’s Tyler Jandron locked it down in the ninth, going three up, three down and keeping the score at 10-3 to hand the X’s their fifth loss in a row.
