SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Following a 2-0 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks last Friday night, the Sioux City Explorers move on to the American Association West Division Championship Series against their rival Kansas City Monarchs. The Explorers host game one of the best-of-three-game series Monday night, September 11 at 7:05 p.m. at Mercy One Field at Lewis and Clark Park.

Following a travel/off day on Tuesday, September 12th, the Miles Wolff Cup shifts to Kansas City. The Monarchs will host games two and three (if necessary) on Wednesday, September 13 at 7:05 p.m. and on Thursday, September 14 at 7:05 p.m. at Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas. Sioux City will advance to the semifinal series for the sixth time as members of the American Association. The current playoff run is the sixth time under Manager Steve Montgomery that the team has made the postseason and the seventh in the American Association. The Explorers made the Northern League playoff three times before joining the American Association in 2008. Overall, this is the 10th playoff appearance for the Explorers.

The X’s and Monarchs had never met in the post season until an epic pair of series in 2018 and 2019—Kansas City won in 2018 and Sioux City in 2019. The pair met again in 2021 with the Monarchs winning in three games on the way to Kansas City’s winning the league crown. The Explorers will look to take the series against KC, the number one seed, who moved on after a two-game sweep of the Sioux Falls Canaries. Kansas City will make their third straight trip to the division championship series, and after a year out of the post season, the Explorers will return to the semifinal round for the third time in four seasons they have been in the playoffs.

The Explorers beat Fargo-Moorhead 8-6 at Fargo and 2-0 at home to set up the match up with the Monarchs. The Explorers and the Monarchs met 12 times this season with the Explorers winning 9 of the 12 meetings between the two. Sioux City went 4-2 on the road in Fargo and 5-1 at home in Sioux City.
