HARRIS HOME RUN LANDS WIN OVER GOLDEYES
EXPLORERS TAKE GAME ONE OF THE SERIES
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Chase Harris delivered an eighth inning two-run home run off reliever RJ Martinez (4-3) to bring the Sioux City Explorers (22-25) back to a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (19-28) Monday night.
3348 fans were treated to a pitcher’s duel 2-1 as Explorers starter Trenton Toplikar pitched 7.2 innings for Sioux City and allowed just one run while Goldeyes starter Marc-Andre Habeck went seven innings, shutting out the X’s. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the X’s.
Explorers Toplikar threw seven shutout innings for the X’s, striking out six batters, and Goldeyes Habeck also dealt seven shutout innings, striking out seven in his time.
In the top of the eighth, Winnipeg’s Tra Holmes led off with a single off Toplikar before stealing second. The stolen base put Holmes in scoring position when Goldeyes Andy Armstrong broke the tie with a single that scored Holmes, giving Winnipeg the lead 1-0.
But the X’s answered as Delvin Zinn knocked a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth off Goldeyes reliever RJ Martinez (4-3), setting the stage for Chase Harris. With Zinn on first, Harris ripped the first pitch from Winnipeg’s Martinez over the left field wall, making it a 2-1 Sioux City lead. The Explorers then turned to Sean Rackoski (7) in the ninth, and he struck out all three batters to earn the save and to put the Explorers up in the series.
The Explorers face the Goldeyes in game two of the three-game series Tuesday July 4 with a first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the season can be purchased online at XSBaseball.com, in person at the Lewis and Clark Park Box Office or by calling 712-277-WINS.
