Milwaukee Holds X’s to Two Hits on Rainy Night
Franklin, WI (July 23rd, 2022) – On a rainy night the Milwaukee Milkmen shut down the Sioux City Explorers bats holding them to only two hits as the X’s fell 3-0.
Milwaukee plated a run before the rain came in the second inning. Keon Barnum doubled to right field leading off the inning. After he advanced to third on a ground out, Mason Davis drove him home with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Milkmen a 1-0 lead.
It was the only offense Milwaukee could muster against Explorers starter Zach Hedges (1-5) who once again pitched well for Sioux City on the road trip. Hedges tossed four innings allowing only a single run on the one hit. He struck out four and walked three while being handed the loss.
He was out-dueled by AJ Jones who took a no decision for Milwaukee. Jones retired the first ten batters he faced and diid not allow a hit until the fifth. He went four and one third scoreless innings allowing two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
After two hits for the X’s put runners at second and third with one out, the long awaited storm came and a rain delay of almost an hour and a half ensued.
After the delay, Milkmen pitcher Frankie Bartow (1-1) picked up the win as he got out of the jam in the fifth and proceeded to toss two and two-thirds scoreless frames.
Milwaukee added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double from Correlle Prime with the bases loaded to take a 3-0 lead.
Sioux City did not gain a hit outside of the fifth inning as they were held to a season low two hits in the contest.
Rookie reliever Mitchell Verburg pitched well for the Explorers as he covered two scoreless frames with four strikeouts.
Rodrigo Benoit (3) got the save with a perfect ninth.
Sioux City will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at 1:00. They will send lefty Patrick Ledet (2-3, 4.13) to the mound to oppose right hander Christian Young (2-2, 3.85).
