OTANO NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK

RIGHT-HANDER GOES 2-0 DURING THE WEEK

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The American Association has named Sioux City Explorers right‑hander Peniel Otano the Carbliss Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 30. ‘

The right-hander went 2-0 for the week, tossing 14 innings and giving up just one earned run while scattering nine hits. Otano finished with a 0.64 ERA while issuing six free passes and punching out 10. His efforts helped lead Sioux City to a 2-1 series win over Gary SouthShore and a split against Kane County in a four-game set.

In the series opener at Gary SouthShore on Tuesday, August 25, Otano spun seven innings of shutout baseball with four strikeouts in the Explorers’ 3-1 win over the RailCats. On Sunday at Lewis and Clark Park, he once again tossed a quality start, going seven frames and yielding just one earned run while striking out six in the final regular-season home game for Sioux City. The win helped the X’s earn the split against the playoff-bound Cougars.

Otano claimed the award for the second time this season after being named the Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 7-14. The native of Peravia, Dominican Republic is 6-5 on the season with a 4.71 ERA in 101.1 innings with 70 strikeouts.

Otano returned to Sioux City for a second season after he posted a 2-7 record with a 6.72 ERA in 2025 for the Explorers. The righty was a versatile piece of a strong Sioux City pitching staff last season, working both as a starter and as a reliever. Otaño pitched 81.2 innings with 58 strikeouts for the X’s and would finish the season in the starting rotation. Otaño finished the year allowing 104 hits and 61 earned runs with a 1.959 WHIP. The Arizona Diamondbacks signed Peniel Otaño in July of 2021 as an international free agent where he spent parts of three seasons in the organization.

The Explorers begin a seven‑game road trip on Tuesday against the Kansas City Monarchs at 6:35 p.m. The game will air on radio on KSCJ and can be seen on video stream at AABASEBALL.TV.
