PAIR OF X’S DOUBLES HELP DOWN DOCKHOUNDS

SIOUX CITY GOES TO 4-0

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Sioux City Explorers (4-0) got lights out pitching and a pair of doubles in a two-run seventh to break a 1-1 time and beat the Lake Country Dockhounds (0-3) by a 3-1 score Tuesday night at Lewis and Clark Park.

With the game tied in the seventh, Wilfredo Gimenez drew a one-out walk off Dockhounds reliever JJ Santa Cruz Jr (0-1). The Dockhounds summoned former Big Leaguer Alex McCrae into the game, who would get the second out of the inning by striking out Chase Harris. But the X’s Vince Fernandez would launch a double off the wall in left just below the scoreboard to score Gimenez from first for his team-leading eighth RBI to take the lead. Daniel Perez would follow with another double to score Fernandez to extend the lead to 3-1.

The two teams both picked up early runs in the game to knot the game at one. The X’s took a short lead in the home half of the second with an RBI double off lefty starter for the Dockhounds Tyler Pike off the bat of Kyle Kasser. Lake Country responded in the next half inning with a two-out RBI single from Nick Banks off Sioux City starter Jared Wetherbee.

Both starters were solid in the ball game with Wetherbee going 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and Pike responding with five frames of his own and 8 strikeouts. The X’s pen was the difference with Francys Peguero tossing 2.1 scoreless innings and Kent Hasler (1-0) following with two innings of goose eggs behind him to pick up the win. Sean Rackoski worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to record his first save of the season. The pen would work 5.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
