Brett Matthews is a Division II pitching product out of Colorado State-Pueblo who has bounced between affiliated and unaffiliated baseball throughout his professional career. The 27-year-old sports an imposing physique, standing at 6’5 “and weighing 219 lbs.
Most recently, Matthews spent the 2024 season in the Atlantic League, splitting time between the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars and Gastonia. He appeared in 34 games, all in relief, pitching to a 3-1 record with a 7.09 ERA. Across 33 innings, he struck out 27 and walked 30 batters.
In his final season in the Colorado Rockies organization, Matthews appeared in 16 games, making three starts across two levels. He pitched in the Arizona Complex league as well as with the High-A Spokane Indians. He finished the season 3-3 with a 4.68 ERA over 25 innings.
After a solid showing in the Pioneer League with Grand Junction, the Colorado Rockies signed Matthews on April 26, 2022. He spent most of the year in the Arizona Complex League but had a one-game cameo with Triple-A Albuquerque during the year. He finished the 2022 season 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in 24.2 innings. In 17 games, Matthews made one start and struck out 29 batters, and walked just six.
Matthews finished his final collegiate season in 2021 at Colorado State-Pueblo and immediately signed with the Grand Junction Rockies of the Pioneer League, who were in the first season in independent baseball after their affiliation with MLB’s Colorado Rockies had come to an end. The righty appeared in 16 games, starting 14 of them, and finished 5-5 with a 5.62 ERA across 81.2 innings. His strikeout-to-walk ratio was once again superb, racking up 98 of them while he only yielded 38 free passes.
Matthews continued his collegiate career at Colorado State-Pueblo, where he pitched his final three amateur seasons for the ThunderWolves in the Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Over three years, he appeared in 26 games, starting 22 of them and completing three of those starts. He pitched to a record of 10-6 with a 5.81 ERA. Over 113 innings, Matthews struck out 149 batters, walking 60 of them. He had his best season for the ThunderWolves as a fifth-year senior in 2021. He was the team’s Friday night starter, making nine starts and ending the season with two complete games. Matthews led all starters with five wins and an ERA of 4.50. He also won the most innings (50) and struck out the most batters (73). The RMAC named Matthews the conference’s second team for his performance. The ThunderWolves season ended in the second round of the RMAC tournament, falling to #21 Metro State Denver.
The right-hander opened his collegiate career at the junior college level, pitching his first two college seasons in Sierra Vista, Arizona, for the Cochise College Apaches. Over the course of two years, Matthews appeared in 36 games, making 15 starts. In his final season in 2018, he finished 5-3, appearing in 20 games and starting five. With a 4.07 ERA over 48.2 frames, he struck out 62 batters and walked 31.
Born in Queen Creek, Arizona, Matthews attended Perry High School in Gilbert. He attended at the same time as San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl Quarterback and Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft Brock Purdy.
