A native of Santa Ana, CA, Lopez pitched for 3 seasons at the University of Illinois-Chicago, before throwing last summer in the MLB Draft League with the Williamsport Crosscutters. In Williamsport, Lopez finished ten games and recorded an ERA of 0.82.
